If you struggle to create habits try these two techniques

I have decided to practice meditation every day this year. One of the best books that I have read about creating a solid meditation practice is The Mind Illuminated. What made this book unique is the focus on actually creating the habit of sitting for meditation every day.

The book advises that you should do a mental checklist before you start the practice. I have been doing it for a while and I'm surprised that a thing so simple as this can have such an impact.

Since this technique works for creating the meditation habit it could potentially help you with other habits and behaviors as well. He is how you could use them:

From the book:

"Motivation: Review your purpose for meditation. Be honest! Don’t judge your reasons. Be aware and accept them. Example: I want more peace of mind."

You are buzzy and your mind goes around thousands of thoughts. The reasons why you want to exercise are not front in your mind when it's time to go to the gym. You need to constantly remind yourself why are you doing what you are doing. Before engaging in your action stop and ask yourself why are you doing it.

From the book:

"Expectations: Bring to mind the dangers of expectations and be gentle with yourself. Find enjoyment in every meditation, no matter what happens. There is no such thing as a “bad” meditation."

There is no such thing as a bad practice, the only bad thing is not to practice. Assuming this mindset will help you combat your perfectionism.

You are not feeling like exercising? No such thing as a bad workout, the only bad thing is to don't workout.

You are not feeling you will be able to write? No such thing as a bad writing session, the only bad thing is to not write.

You get the idea.

Do these two things before any habit or practice that you are struggling with and let me know if it works for you!
